Council wants 25 per cent tree cover in streets and 35 per cent in open space. It also wants a tree in every suitable nature strip by 2030. Many Wyndham areas are dangerous in extreme heat.

The outline is the real City of Wyndham boundary, from Wyndham City Council’s own open data, licensed CC BY 3.0 AU. There is no background map: loading one would send your address and the area you are looking at to another company, from a page about your political views. We do not yet have per-suburb boundaries under a licence that lets us publish them, so the suburb figures live in the List view. We would rather show you a map that is true than one with invented borders.
The ask
Resilient Wyndham 2026 to 2035 is open for comment on council's consultation site. Say what your street needs.
Recording your view is not open yet, because doing so means collecting a political opinion and we are still settling the legal footing for that. Here is what that means and when it opens. In the meantime, contacting your own representative carries more weight than a tally anyway.
What is going on
Council's own assessment is direct: many areas within Wyndham are at risk during extreme heat events because of a lack of tree cover combined with extensive built surfaces. In a growth corridor of new estates on treeless volcanic plain, that is a structural problem rather than a gardening one.
The targets come from the Tree and Urban Forest Policy, adopted on 28 September 2021, and the City Forest and Habitat Strategy covering 2017 to 2040: 25 per cent canopy cover in streets, 35 per cent in open space, and at least one tree in every suitable nature strip by 2030.
Resilient Wyndham 2026 to 2035 is currently out for community feedback, which makes this the moment when comment actually counts.
